How do I use a .bsg file?

Compact engine prototype V1

Experimental, this is nowhere near a good engine
Like, at all

At any rate, I'm directing myself towards making engines in Besiege as compact as possible, without mods!

Y to start, it'll fire up on its own and choose its own direction (should be clockwise, not that it matters that much)

Small engines are fun. im going there next too. But i have a different path. Glad to see you arent modding :D Vanilla is more fun in the long road.
I have to finish my straight 8 with 45 degree firing that i have it mounted in a giant hot rod ;) Then im gonna try for compact. i have a few, i havent ever posted.
heres a tiny, quirky one : http://besiegedownloads.com/machine/29687

meant to mention, by starting tour piston halfway through the stroke your making more work and parts for yourself. Vibrations aside, have a dual crank or single crank lets you fit two pistons in the same area as this.

Also you can use a small unpowered wheel as your crank, just have to use half placement. It reduces the engines throw, but space saving is huge! http://besiegedownloads.com/machine/28306

Smaller the better but the larger the more power it would give
For really compact things this is awesome (I used it in previous builds, got the design from you obviously hahaha)

I actually want to build something different, and it's not going to be an engine
Maybe, I wonder if I could use it in one
But I'm going to try something around gears to see if it works, if it doesn't I won't upload it (would be my next upload)

I dont really follow what you were saying about my piston design on the other machines. If you are talking about using ball joints as pistons, they do deflect a little of the pressure, but thats easily fixed by putting a ballast block a half space above and connecting the the nighest slider for linear movement.
